Restoring a Vintage Color Television Set

COMPATIBLE COLOR APPROVED FOR TV

By JACK GOULD

New color sets will receive both color and black-and-white programs, depending on whichever type is broadcast.

The newly approved color system technically involves the simultaneous transmission of two signals. One signal represents the brightness of the picture and is the same as the existing black-and-white signal.

The other signal represents the individual colors and their intensity. The existing monochrome receiver makes use of only the brightness signal; the color set makes use of both.
