No surprises there. Lately I’ve been busying myself with getting the oven up to par, in preparation for a temperature tracking test. I ran it up to a full 750*f with only propane, but this used quite a lot of fuel and was not very predictable since I have no way to accurately meter the gas to control the temperature. Also the jetting is very finicky, it will run rich at low settings but fine up high, or vice versa. If it’s run at approximately stoich down low, the flames run lean and tend to go out at higher settings. Instead I intend to run the oven at a low baseline temperature using propane for fuel conservation reasons and complete the rest of the bake out cycle with electric elements, as such it will be critical to fully characterize the ovens ability to keep heat in order to calculate the ramps for the electric elements reliably. It’s quite easy to get up to around 250-350*f and leave the gas at a particular manual setting, using a bottle mounted regulator. So I’ll use the propane to ‘get things rolling’, and have the PID controller run the elements the rest of the way for much finer control of the temperatures. This is done the same as what’s at the museum already, with a solid state 40 amp relay triggered by the controller. The hope is that it makes the best use of what I have available in terms of power out in my garage. Just this afternoon I mounted the controller to the oven frame and I have the relay mounted to a small heat sink, also ready for attachment to the oven. The next steps will be to wire the elements up to the relay and the controller, get the pumping equipment connected to the oven, attach the vacuum gauges and give it a shake down test. I need to make sure I don’t blow a fuse, and the vacuum equipment will get proven reliable at the same time. This is necessary, as I had a machinist make me an intermediate flange to go between the stem chuck and diffusion pump to facilitate connections for the monitoring equipment. Once I know I can achieve the required vacuum, I can make a test run of a tube. On a related note. it remains to be seen what all of this nonsense in Ukraine means for the supply chain as the gun supplier (MELZ LLC) is just outside of Moscow. Obviously the hope is that things will blow over, if not and sanctions are not lifted, I will have to explore alternative sources. There are some in Denmark and Germany, but the prices are nowhere near as competitive as MELZ. We will see what happens there. I’m still pushing forward, albeit at a slow pace. Parenthood takes up much of my time, but I remain committed to serving the community in this project. I’m sorry I cannot make it to the meet, but I’m still in it to win it from Maryland.
