Corona Discharge in Mechanical Television

 

In 1928 all mechanical receivers used a flat neon tube for the light source. As a result, the image was dim, and orange in color. This article descirbes the use of corona discharge to create the image.

One company, the Radiovision company, sold equipment for this technique. At that time, several stations were broadcasting facsimile images ("Radio Pictures") after their regular broadcast completed at night. A drum recorder, with a piece of photosensitive paper attached, re-created the original image. This catalog describes the use of corona discharge for both radio pictures and television.
